About Emily

Emily graduated from La Trobe University in 2009 with a Bachelor of Physiotherapy and has worked in private practices across Melbourne since then, gaining experience in treating a variety of musculoskeletal injuries.

Emily previously worked as head Physiotherapist for the Heidelberg Football Club for four years, and continues to have a special interest in rehabilitating sporting injuries and getting motivated people back to sport and high level function as quickly and as safely as possible. Emily has completed the sports level 1 and 2 courses to gain further knowledge in this field.

Most recently, Emily has worked onsite for Virgin Australia, providing physiotherapy services to their staff and managing work related injuries. This has given her great exposure to the stresses related to repetitive, manual handling jobs, and has allowed Emily to develop skills in treating injuries that can develop in these situations.

With several years of experience teaching Clinical Pilates, Emily likes to incorporate functional, core strengthening and postural retraining into client’s rehabilitation. She also utilises dry needling and other manual techniques to relieve pain and tension with the overall ultimate goal of injury rehabilitation and long term prevention of recurrence.

Emily has recently relocated to the Surf Coast after spending a year abroad in South and Central America. She loves the ocean, is an ex-boatie, and is currently a developing surfer. She also enjoys social netball and tennis and is a long-suffering Collingwood supporter.

GET TO KNOW ME

3 words that describe me: Empathetic, Warm, Adventurous
What is my treatment philosophy?: I aim to keep people moving safely and confidently using a combination of evidence-based measures, including manual hands-on treatment and targeted exercise to not only reduce pain, but to build resilience and prevent future injury.

By gaining a solid understanding of my client’s goals and lifestyle, I tailor rehabilitation to be achievable, sustainable, and effective.

Education is central to my approach, empowering clients with the tools to help themselves manage their injuries and stay active.
Best thing about working at Coastal Balance: The wonderful team! Full of amazing, caring, and professional women working out of a beautiful open space in Torquay.
Biggest challenge as a physio: Managing client expectations around recovery timelines and helping them to stay patient, consistent and motivated, particularly when progress isn’t always linear. Also....never knowing what injury or condition may walk through the door! But this keeps things interesting!!
When not at Coastal Balance, where can you find me?: Surfing somewhere along the Surf Coast; in the kitchen baking something yummy; propped at a wine bar with friends; or off on the next overseas adventure!
Why I chose physio as a profession?: Originally, I loved learning about anatomy and physiology. Physio had a broad range of settings you could work in, but I knew private practice with sports focus appealed to me most. I love getting to know people, and being able to help them to do the things that make them happy is incredibly rewarding.
